What types of electrical kits are there and which one is for me?

You can find Two types of electrical kits, depending on the connection:

  1. for category O1 trailers (up to 750kg)
  2. or category O2 trailers (for more than 750Kg).

In addition, in each type, you will be able to see different measurements that refer to the total length of the trailer.

  1. There are 7-pin connectors – this is the most common for trailers because it does not include the reversing light.
  2. and 13-pin – includes reversing light

You can find electrical kits for small box trailers, from 1.5 meters to 6 meters.

So, depending on the type of trailer you have and its dimensions, you will choose the 7- or 13-pole kit. If in doubt, always ask the manufacturer of your trailer or caravan. In COMANCHE We have specific electrical kits for our models, but they can also be adapted to trailers of similar measurements..

What should a trailer electrical kit include?

Above all, make sure that the trailer electrical kit you are purchasing has all the necessary lights and reflectors. APPROVED.

A 7 pole basic kit must always include:

  • Position light (2 rear)
  • Brake light (minimum 2)
  • Anti-fog (minimum 1)
  • License plate light (minimum 1)
  • Indicators (flashing)
  • two white front lights, if the trailer is wider

A kit for larger trailers, the 13 pole one, must include:

  • all the lights in the basic kit
  • the reversing lights
  • the clearance lights, if the trailer is high
  • Side lights, if it is a long trailer
  • two white front lights, if the trailer is wider

How do I connect the electrical kit to my trailer?

You don't have to be an electrician to change or repair your trailer's signage. Just a little basic knowledge and you'll be able to install it without any problems.

Universal electrical kit consists of a standard socket base, cable tubes of different colours and quick pressure connectors.

Here you go a scheme that is standard for all manufacturers.

How to connect an electrical kit for trailers

Each pin on the plug will indicate the number and the wires are differentiated by color.

  1. for O1 category trailers (up to 750kg) With the 7-pole connection it is installed like this:
    • Pin 1 = Yellow wire = Left turn signal
    • Pin 2 = Blue wire = Fog light
    • Pin 3 = White wire = Ground or mass
    • Pin 4 = Green wire = Right turn signal
    • Pin 5 = Brown Wire = Right Position Light
    • Pin 6 = Red wire = Brake
    • Pin 7 = Black wire = Left position light (if your hose has 6 wires, you can make a bridge with Pin 5)
  2. and for O2 category trailers (for more than 750Kg) You will install the 13-pin plug in the same order, except that you will put the reverse gear on Pin 8. You will also have several free Pins where you can put direct current, ideal for a caravan or an electric winch.

What do I do if my car's plug doesn't match the trailer's?

In this case you will need an ADAPTER.

There may be 2 cases here:

1. Your car's socket has 13 pins and the trailer or caravan you are going to tow has a 7 pin connection

2. or the other way around – your car socket has 7 pins and the trailer or caravan has a 13 pin connection – in this case, since the power of your car is lower than that of your trailer, you will not have the 12V power supply or reversing lights on the towed load.

The connections are standard for (almost) all countries. So A trailer is always connected to any car in the same way, although an adapter is needed.

In summary…

Whatever car you have, and whatever trailer or caravan you have, You can always connect them with each other. However, you must take into account the regulations on the weight and dimensions of the load to be towed in order to connect the correct electrical kit.

On many occasions, to get rid of headaches, Users choose to install the 13-pole kits although its trailer is category O1 (up to 750kg). You can do this and thus ensure that you have all the additional signage that helps other drivers see you on the road.

According to current regulations, the user is responsible for complying with all the lighting and signaling rules for his vehicle.

So don't take any chances. Check your trailer lights before your next trip so that they can see you clearly on the road.
